Back in the 1960′s and 50′s, mainframes were being used- they are what we now know as dedicated servers. These servers would run critical processing tasks like data manipulation. We only have to go as far back as the 1990′s when the same setups were being used. But with the development of the web and other network services, the term dedicated server became more common. And with that, server hosting evolved became what we have today.
A dedicated servers workload isn’t that different to what it was in the beginning. In the 90′s dedicated servers were used for email and file storage commercial enterprise changed and the internet became more wide spread more and more web servers were put online to cope with this new demand. ~ The WWW boom saw a different, and huge demand for hosting websites, databases etc as well as email. ~ A huge trend shift in demand meant that from then on there was need for website hosting, databases, DNS and mail. } You can be sure over the years, the demand for dedicated server hosting will change again. Over time, server OS software has changed. Different operating systems are much more in demand than with home desktops. Linux is generally more popular, as its considered more secure. The majority of Linux operating systems are free, although some premium versions are paid.
Often server and desktop hardware share the same components. It was at one point all about multiple CPU’s. Server hosting architecture supports multiple cores on single CPU’s these days. However most do not need this with the introduction of dual and quad core CPUs. On its way for server hosting, 6 and 8 core CPU’s.
RAM is another area where the amount needed has grown with the amount that programs need. In the old days, the number of megabytes of RAM you had could be counted on one hand.
